City of Bones Storyline

“The boy never cried again, and he never forgot what he’d learned: that to love is to destroy, and that to be loved is to be the one destroyed.”
― Cassandra Clare, City of Bones

Clary Fray, 15, arrives at the Pandemonium Club in New York City not expecting to see a murder, much less one carried out by three teens brandishing weird weapons and covered in strange tattoos. The body then vanishes into thin air.

When the killers are undetectable to other people and there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to indicate that a boy has died, it is challenging to call the authorities. Maybe he was a boy?

Clary is having her first encounter with the Shadowhunters, a group of soldiers whose mission is is to purge the world of demons. It’s also her first time meeting Jace, a Shadowhunter who has an angelic appearance but behaves badly.

Clary is violently drawn into Jace’s world within twenty-four hours after her mother vanishes and she herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in people like Clary and her mother, who are just regular people? And how did Clary get the Sight so quickly? The Shadowhunters are curious about…

City of Bones Review

“Where there is love, there is often also hate. They can exist side by side.”
― Cassandra Clare, City of Bones

The book is well-written and engaging. This novel piqued my interest greatly since the author does a fantastic job of describing a completely different world. With linked plotlines between each character, Cassandra Clare takes the concept of childhood fantasy creatures and makes the Shadow World seem incredibly real.

The reader learns about the Shadow World and Shadowhutners alongside Clary by reading the novel from her point of view, which eliminates any exposition that could have been tedious otherwise. The writer did a fantastic job of making Clary appear so ordinary.

By doing this, she establishes a stronger connection with the reader and makes her emotions much more relatable.
